Safeguarding
According to Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2024, safeguarding is defined as the measures taken to ensure the safety and well-being of children. The updated definition emphasizes:
- Providing early help: Offering support as soon as issues emerge.
- Protection from harm: Protecting children from maltreatment, including online risks.
- Preventing impairment: Focusing on children's mental and physical development.
- Ensuring safe environments: Promoting conditions that offer safe and effective care.
- Achieving best outcomes: Taking actions to support children's success in life.
Child protection is part of the safeguarding process. It focuses on protecting individual children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. This includes child protection procedures which detail how to respond to concerns about a child.
Safeguarding children and child protection guidance and legislation applies to all children up to the age of 18.
